American Foundation & Basement Repair installs a state-of-the-art French drain (aka drain tile) system called WaterGuard – a patented product only available through Basement Systems dealers.

WaterGuard with flange on the left vs old-fashioned French drain pipe on the right.
What makes WaterGuard much more effective than a basic French drain or drain tile system is its design. WaterGuard is specially engineered to sit on the basement footing, keeping it up out of the dirt and mud (also known as the Mud Zone) and making it highly resistant to clogging.
A special flange also makes a clean edge at the basement wall and prevents dirt and debris from falling into the system.

In the past, clay pipe sections (called "tiles") were installed in the footing of basements. Eventually, the industry switched to PVC pipes that were installed along the interior perimeter of a basement or along the exterior of the structure . The pipes were used for field drainage, exterior footing drains, road drainage, and interior drainage (French drain system).
These pipes proved to be not the most effective solution for drainage. They often times got clogged from mud and dirt. An image of a clogged French drain pipe is shown below to the right. However, in the 1990s, a more effective alternative had been developed – the WaterGuard drainage channel system.
Drain clogged with debris, that won't let water through. The big difference between WaterGuard and French drains is that the WaterGuard drainage system sits on top of the footing, instead alongside the footing. This is key to keeping the drain from getting clogged. A drain that sits in the mud, will most definitely clog with mud.
Will all systems along the footing clog? No, but many will. Some sooner than later. It depends on the soil and the condition of the foundation. With the WaterGuard drainage system you never have to worry about the system clogging.
